Is your horse fit?

What is Body Condition Scoring and why should we do it?

Body condition scoring (BCS), also known as fat scoring, is an objective method to assess your horse's weight and overall health. This system evaluates fat covering in three key areas: the neck, the middle, and the hindquarters. Horses are assigned a score from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (obese). The best way of taking a good care of your horse is to keep record of the BCS of your horse an prevent very serious health conditions like laminitis.

Key Areas for Body Condition Scoring

You don't need any special equipment; simply use your hands to feel for fat deposits. Remember, muscle should feel firm and does not contribute to the fat score.

1. Neck and Shoulders

• Assessment: Check for fat deposits around the neck and shoulders.

• Ideal Condition: The neck should be well-defined, blending smoothly into the shoulders without excessive fat.

2. Middle (Ribcage)

• Assessment: Run your hands over the ribcage.

• Ideal Condition: You should be able to feel the ribs with only light pressure. The key is ribs should be felt but not seen.

3. Hindquarters

• Assessment: Examine the slope of the hindquarters.

• Ideal Condition: The hindquarters should slope gently down from the croup, appearing slightly rounded. A pronounced "gutter" along the backbone or an apple-shaped bottom indicates excess fat.
